The Big Chop & TWA’s

Hair Story with Kenya!

Posted on: 6th September 2012 by CFYH

Hi Kenya! You are stunning! I saw your bigchop photo and had to ask you a few questions…so here we go!

Why did you choose to go natural?

I went decided to go natural because I was going through too much with my processed hair. I do not know how to do my own hair myself very well but I knew there would be consequences if I didn’t take care of my hair while having a relaxer in it. I started getting relaxers as a freshmen in high school and by my junior year my hair started breaking off drastically due to tight ponytails I had to wear for cheerleading.

As an alternative to keep less stress off of my hair I started getting sew ins to help my hair grow back out. That helped a little but then I eventually got another relaxer and just cut my hair into a cute short cut. By the time I left for my freshmen year for college my hair was growing back but not being able to go to a beautician regularly, my hair once again started breaking off so I decided to go back to sews in that didn’t help either by the time summer of 2012 came around and I made my decision to cut my hair off after being so stressed and crying about my hair not growing back fast and healthy. Cutting my hair off was the best decision I have ever made to hair ever since the first time I put a relaxer in my hair.

How was the experience of having all your hair shaved off?

While I was getting my hair chopped off I was sitting in the seat of the barber’s chair anxious to see my new look but also nervous about him chopping off too much. My mom who has been natural for years came with me and took pictures and was super excited about my cut as well. I thought I was going to cry but I didn’t cry. I did tear up a little after seeing my hair drop to the floor but I sucked it up and came out smiling.

How long have you been natural for, since your BC?

I have been natural for a little over two months now.

How did family & friends react to your decision to go natural?

My family and friends LOVE my new cut even strangers! I get so many compliments on my hair now almost daily. I have never gotten so many compliments on my hair EVER even when I would just get out of the shop after getting a fresh relaxer.

Have you made any hair-care mistakes in the past?

Yes! Just not taking proper care of my hair is my biggest mistake and getting a relaxer!

I know it’s still early days, but do you have a hair regimen or anything you plan on doing to your hair now that you’re starting again?

What I plan on doing to my hair is just keeping it low cut for now. I have been getting a lot of attention from my new hair. I have been reblogged about 108 times since I last checked last week. I also model so this look definitely makes me unique and captures my natural beauty.

Any words of encouragement for those wanting to BC but are afraid?

DO NOT BE AFRAID! Take the risk! Your hair will grow back and you will feel a lot better about yourself. I have become a lot more confident in myself and I feel like I can impact others to feel confident about being natural as well. It took a while to realize it but it is JUST HAIR! Your hair should not make you who you are! You may not want go as low as I did but cutting out the processed hair inch by inch may be a little safer for you. Also don’t let anyone tell you that your hair is too nappy! There are so many moisturizers and products to use to make your natural hair manageable. Once again it is just hair and it will grow back! LOVE THE NATURAL YOU!

Hair Story with Stephanie

Hi Stephanie, why did you choose to go natural?

I chose to go natural for a few main reasons:

1.I had always envisaged myself getting married with natural hair and realised that I’d have to stop perming my hair to accomplish that goal.
2. I genuinely believe that God was telling me to do it and it was something that it was my final step towards accepting my true beauty, both internally and externally.
3. My hair had also pretty much stopped taking to relaxer, so I was literally perming my hair twice a year.

How was the experience of having all your hair shaved off?

The experience was a mixture of excitement, nervousness and peace. I cut my hair myself very randomly and only let two people know I was doing it before I started. I thought it important to ensure that i made the decision for me and no-one else. It’s was so crazy watching my hair fall in the sink.

How long have you been natural for, since your BC?

I’ve been natural for a little over two months and I’m really happy with my decision.

How did family & friends react to your decision to go natural?

My parents and brother disliked it and said it would take them a while to get used to it, whilst my family at my church, EOW, loved it and were excited that I finally did it. My friends reactions have been a mixture of negatives and positives but mostly positives. To be honest because I knew why I went natural and what it signified for me I wasn’t heavily affected by their mixture in response.

Have you made any hair-care mistakes in the past?

The only hair-care mistake I made was back in 2009 when I was impatient and used an old Olive Oil Maximum Strength relaxer for my hair. I left it on for too long and it left severe burns at the back of my hair and my front sides. I actually had to shave of the entire back and sides if my hair to hide the bald patches. Let’s just thank God that the whole Rihanna shave was in season!

I know it’s still early days, but do you have a hair regimen or anything you plan on doing to your hair now that you’re starting again?

Regime wise, my hair is very thirsty and loves oils and natural things. So every week I co-wash with Tresemme and the do deep condition using Herbal Essences Conditioner, Honey and Olive Oil. I leave that in for like half a day or more and just rinse out and then use Cocoa nut Oil and Olive Oil mixed with Organics hair moisturising cream and palm roll my hair. The texture of my hair softens and it smells sooo sweet.

Any words of encouragement for those wanting to BC but are afraid?

I made a note of Facebook regarding this and it’s pretty simple. Ladies, if you want to go natural decide why, find your reason and without having too much conversation about it, take yourself for a consultation to a natural hair salon. I say this because it’s easy to get caught up in the buzz of this hair reform that’s sweeping over the UK and then turn around and realise it was never something you really wanted or needed. If your dead set on BCing please do the following, again check reason, don’t talk about it too much, because you’ll find that most people still don’t understand why some women are going natural and finally cut when YOU ARE READY. If you decide to do it then immediately take yourself to the salon or if you’re like me, get a sharp pair of scissors and start your journey. It’s a tense step but trust me, if you accept and believe in your own true beauty then it won’t matter how many compliments and picture likes you get. Remember to love you and Care for Your Hair – whatever state it’s in!

Pictures? I hear you say…yes pictures. They will allow you to monitor your growth. It’s hard to tell sometimes whether your hair has grown or how it’s changed, but through pictures you can look at your hair over the months, and gage whether all you’re doing is working, or if you may need to change a few things in your regime.

When I first did the big chop, I felt like it was taking agggggggggges for my hair to grow, but looking at pictures of month 1 in comparison to month 4 I could see growth.

Another important thing is to stay patient, and set realistic hair goals for yourself, hair on average grows 1/4 to 1/2 an inch a month, so don’t go expecting 4 inches in 2 months…most likely isn’t going to happen.

Stay encouraged ladies…hair grows! And yes that includes our type of hair as well.

Comparison pictures of my hair: The picture above  was way back when (Jan 2010) and the other was (May 2011) …Hair grows ladies…you’ve just got to be patient with it & treat it the best you can.

And below April 2011 & July 2011! See how important it is to take pictures?!

I’m due another update picture!

TWA/Big Chop Files…

Tips of the Day:

*Take extra care of your hair, yes…even when it’s short. Your short hair will one day become the ends of your hair. If you damage them now (e.g. using excessive heat) you will find that you may have to constantly trim/cut your ends. In order for your hair to retain length, the ends need extra care – in this case your short hair needs all the TLC it can get.

*Condition regularly, I found that really helped during my TWA stage, it helped keep my hair moisturised & easier to work with.

*Combat dryness by creating your own hair spritz/refresher

*Enjoy this stage of your hair. Many people in their TWA stage cannot wait for it to grow out…but don’t forget to love your hair in every stage it goes through. Trust me when I say when your hair gets to shoulder length & you’re in the shower washing & detangling for up to an hour you will miss the short stages.

*Listen to your hair. At this stage of your journey you’re probably trying out new products and trying to find what works for you – so you need to pay attention to your hair & how it responds to the products you use.

For any TWA ladies out there, what have you found helps/helped you through your shorter stages? Please share…
