Salon Experience…fail!

Posted on: 23rd August 2012 by CFYH

Hey ladies,

As some of you may know, last Friday I took a trip to a salon called Purely Natural. I thought it would be nice to go down and try something new – a flexi rod set. Now since I’ve been natural (3 years now) this was my second time going to a salon. This being because, I just find no-one knows my hair like I do. However, being a salon that caters exclusively for natural hair & locs I’d like to believe I’m in safe hands. I’ve also heard some decent reviews so I thought why not give it a try.

Unfortunately I’ve given my overall experience 5/10… it wasn’t that great.

Look at those ends *cries*

My reasons:

Customer service is key and it’s the little things that matter. At the other salon I went to, the stylist took her time to ask how I was, offer me a drink, talk through the current state of my hair, my hair needs (basically a consultation) and also explained the procedure of my treatment and introduced me to my stylist. At Purely Natural there was none of this. I hate hate hate walking into a salon and the atmosphere is unwelcoming. That’s enough to make me uncomfortable straight away and question whether I can trust my hair in your hands.

The young lady that ended up washing my hair for me was lovely but she was still learning and no offence but if you’re going to have a stylist that’s training (on someone’s head!) there should be another stylist to oversee what she’s doing. Once again, I hate having to butt in and tell a hairstylist to do this and not do that but I was left with no choice.

She washed my hair well but I could feel she was creating tangles as she was going along. I said nothing because I thought hmm maybe she’s really good with detangling…until I saw her bring out a fine tooth comb. Yes, a fine tooth comb. Then I knew it was a wrap, I had to say something. She got another comb and then tried combing from the roots instead of the ends…at this point I wanted to scream.

After, I was directed to the chair where I would be having my hair set in the flexi rods. As I sat there, I saw her bring out a blowdryer…then she turned it on. In my mind I thought surely she’s not putting that straight on my head without sectioning it, detangling it properly (since it wasn’t done well during the wash) and putting some sort of heat protectant in…surely not. Once again, I was wrong. It has to be the worst blowdry ever, no product, my hair was flying everywhere. I really did want to leave at this point.

Another stylist seeing that I was uncomfortable then took over to flexi rod my hair. She was nice but clearly in a rush so my hair did not come out as I desired at all.

Once I was done and I looked in the mirror I thought maybe this isn’t that baddd. However the lights were now dim as they were closing. When I did get to see my hair properly first thing that came to mind…’What a waste!’ especially as the next morning my hair was back to normal.

In addition, all over my head I had knots, knots and more knots from where the shed hair wasn’t properly detangled and removed, so it latched onto my hair. As a result I had to get the scissors out to cut most of them out as there was no way of even trying to undo it.

So there you have it…my experience.

I was pretty upset seeing as I know and have seen how good they are with braided styles.

…*sigh*…

This was the result I wanted…

Upcoming Review || How I Grew It Long…Naturally

Posted on: 5th August 2012 by CFYH

Hi ladies!

I was recently sent a book by Diane Hall, the author of ‘How I Grew It Long…Naturally’ to read and review.

Her book basically a  journal of her natural hair progress over the years.

“…based purely on a desire to share my knowledge and what I have learned throughout my personal hair growth journey with you, in order to help you achieve great results…” – Diane Hall

Just by flipping through the pages, I can see that this book would be great for any newly natural. It’s an easy to follow book and something you can most definitely refer back to.

Diane also has many step-by-step  illustrations of her haircare routine; that way you can see how she looks after her hair as well as read about it.

Once I’ve read it, I’ll be back with what I think and my next review will include a discount code for any of you that are interested in purchasing it.

P.s. For those free this coming weekend she’s having a book launch (see flyer below)

Root2Tip Review!

Posted on: 5th July 2012 by CFYH

Hey Ladies!

Product review time! In March I was sent Root2Tip’s Hair growth pack.

“Our two best selling Oils together, saving you 10% of the original cost. Customers who use both oils together, The ROOT ENERGIZER and the Scalp HYDRATiON Serum, experience an acceleration in hair growth noticeable after 3-4 months usage! The combination of our 2 powerful formulas will give you not only the GROWTH you desire, but a healthy scalp also. You also get my top 10 hair tips for growing healthy hair as a part of the pack! So try it today, you will not regret it!”

I waited a while for before I reviewed these products so I could really see how my hair reacted to it 3-4months later – especially as results are meant to be noticeable after this time.

Now I can say months later, my hair didn’t grow significantly longer than it usually does but the hair that has grown in that time is much thicker than the rest of my hair. The Root2Tip oil set were the only oils I’ve been using since I received them so I can definitely attribute some of the thickness I’ve experienced to this.

Just so there’s no confusion this isn’t some miracle growth product lol. I always get asked ‘What can I use to make my hair grow quick?’ I personally know of no such thing. Products don’t make your hair grow but they can definitely aid in the health of ones hair. Also I always get the question ‘What can I use to make my really really thick? I hear castor oil is good’ Once again…there is no such thing.

Applying castor oil to your scalp may help make your hair thick in the sense that, the individual growing strands of hair may come out thicker. However, it won’t suddenly increase the density of your hair…that can’t change as it’s genetically determined.

So in regards to these products, I noticed thicker strands at the root of my hair compared to the rest of my hair. I like that I’ve seen some difference since using them.

In addition, I was sent the sample size of their Heaven’s Hair Milk, Honey Rain Juice & Twurly Butter. Of all three I loved, loved loooooved the Twurly Butter. First off, this product smelt so good and has made it to the top of my list when it comes to products for twisting/braiding and defining your hair with.

I wish I still had some left to show you how smooth and shiny my twists & twist outs came out :(

For me this product is comparable to BeUnique’s Moisture Custard (another top hair product!) and is definitely something I would buy over & over again!

As I Am: Hydration Elation Intensive Conditioner review

Posted on: 22nd June 2012 by CFYH

Deep conditioning with As I Am – Hydration Elation Intensive Conditioner.

I’ve had this conditioner since Feb so a full review was welllllll overdue.

Here are my ‘quick thoughts’ I posted about this product a few months back:

“When I first received it I was super excited to try it because I’ve heard great things, and also because this was an intense conditioner. But then it came & I wondered how this hand size tub would last (my hair is quite greedy when it comes to products)

To my surprise, I’ve used this about 5/6 times so far and look at how much is still left, just about used 1/2 of it! And yup it definitely is an intense moisturising & strengthening conditioner.”

From then until now, my thoughts haven’t changed one bit! This deep conditioner works so well and to me, is comparable to the Philip Kingsley Elasticizer. It’s extremely moisturising and such a treat to my hair when it’s dry.

For me this product is more a luxury deep conditioner (as it’s not something I’d use every week). When my hair is in SOS mode this is always what I’ve reached for.

Improvements?

I’d love if this product was available in the UK in a bigger size tub (there is one, I’m not to sure if we have it yet)

Would I purchase this?

Yes, definitely…it works very well for me when my hair is seriously dry. However, it’s more a luxury staple for me.

Marks out of 5?

4/5

Original Moxie™: Emollience Pre-treatment

Posted on: 19th June 2012 by CFYH

Hey ladies,

Today I’ll be reviewing the Emollience Pre-treatment, another product from the Original Moxie range (finally…I know, I know)

Here’s some useful information about this pre-treatment:

*It’s a penetrating oil treatment that restores the correct moisture balance to parched hair.

*This product is great for those with extremely dry hair that need help to recover it from harsh environmental conditions or chemical treatments.

*The special ingredients are; Cupuaçu Butter, a thick, rich emollient packed with phytosterols, possesses a high capacity for water absorption and helps dry hair hold onto moisture.  Castor Oil provides unbeatable shine and creates a protective barrier around the hair shaft. Click for a full list of ingredients.

*Smell: Spicy, sweet and minty.

*Best when applied all over dry hair prior to washing or wetting (or just to dry ends) and gently heat to aid penetration.

Note from Rachel, the founder:

I use this on my own hair on a weekly basis during the Winter months, to combat dryness caused by indoor heating and cold air. You can also leave it on overnight for extra conditioning.

Now for my thoughts!

I received the sample size of this product which is quite small, but surprisingly this little tub goes a long way (I’ve it 3 times already, yes over my whole head!) So for those that would like to sample this product before buying the full size, go ahead. There’s a enough for you to use more than once and make your judgement on whether your hair likes the product or not.

This product turns into  oil form as you apply it to your hair:

However, as soon as I unscrewed the lid the first thing that hit me was the smell…now it’s not bad, its just not as pleasant as it could be. The smell of this product has been described as sweet, spicy & minty. As some of you already know, my nose doesn’t take too well to minty hair products. Also, I generally just prefer my hair products to have a more sweet, fruity smell.

On the other hand, one thing I do like about this product (and the other Original Moxie products) is that this little pot definitely did what it said it would.  I made sure I used this on a day my hair was at it’s driest, so you could see the before & after effects. More interestingly, despite the combination of the oils & butters within this product…it provided shine and softness without that greasy feeling.

This is a great pre-treatment option for the ladies that find their hair hair gets extremely dry or for those with colour treated hair, as it did add help add some extra conditioning & shine.

Improvements?

I’d love if this product was available unscented or in more than one scent

Would I purchase this?

Maybe if my hair was to ever suffer from serious dryness, especially in the colder months…however for my hair it’s not essential.

Marks out of 5?

3/5– Once again, the smell was my biggest let down

CURLS Shampoo & Conditioner review!

Posted on: 29th May 2012 by CFYH

Hey Ladies!

Many of you know that I was sent this range of CURLS products to try out and review.

Now in this post I’ll be talking about the Clarifying shampoo & Coconut sublime conditioner, and ladies I have to say the first thing that ignited the love I have for these products was the smell!!!  These products smell like some sort of tropical cocktail paradise – In Love ♥

Now over the past week I had crazy build-up from the gel and various products I’d been using, so I needed a clean start. When I need my hair squeaky clean, I prefer reaching for clarifying shampoo’s as opposed to others because they really ensure all the grime and build-up gets lifted and washed out.

With clarifying shampoos I’ve used in the past my hair was subsequently very dry. Clean? Yes, but very dry and stripped. So I used this expecting similar results. Thankfully it cleaned my hair but didn’t leave it dry or stripped at all which was a nice surprise.

The CURLS instructions suggests using this 1x every 2 months to purify & clean your hair from build up, debris and unwanted chemicals.

Another plus is that this shampoo is sulphate free!!! Whoop! Also, this shampoo has been recommended for the regular swimmers out there, as it effectively removes chlorine, and leaves your hair smelling like a mix between pineapple & grapefruit… another plus right? I thought so too!

This product is definitely a staple for me now, especially as a little goes a very long way.

Then I used the conditioner to follow up my shampoo and my hair loved this, from the picture below you may not be able to notice much conditioner in my hair and I’m sure you’re wondering why…my hair sucked this stuff right up. This is honestly the first time I’ve experienced anything like it lol. Now this also smelt delightful (like coconut & vanilla) and was uber moisturising! I really really do like products that say they provide moisture and actually do!

The only downside about this was that it didn’t really have as much slip as I usually like, so it may be best finger detangling and sectioning the hair prior to washing and conditioning. I wasn’t a major problem, but I do prefer my conditioners to have slip.

Have any of you used this line before? What did you think?
