Hair in 2013

Happy New Year Ladies

Once again I want to thank all of you for being part of CFYH. It amazes me to see how this group is growing & growing each day. This new year Care for Your Hair has so much more in store for you, so I hope you all stick around to witness it.

Some don’t believe in waiting until the new year to make changes and other consider a new year, a fresh start – so however you view it, I’m sure you still have goals & aspirations for the new season we’re moving into.

My Hair Resolutions:

While I’m not planning on doing anything major to my hair I have a couple of changes I want to make to my regime:

  • At most use heat only once a month – Although I don’t use heat excessively, towards the end of the year I became lazy and more reliant on the blowdryer and its a much quicker way to dry your hair. On the flipside I noticed overall my hair was becoming a lot dryer/brittle than usual. My plan is to return back to braiding my hair after a wash as a heat free way of drying my hair.
  • Start the three month Castor Oil Challenge with AfroDeity. I’m starting this challenge as I’m just simply curious to see if I’ll get any significant results. For those that aren’t familiar with what this is: The aim of the challenge is to see if castor oil aids in growing your hair by using it at least three times a week in various ways. This can be done in various ways, you could do a scalp massage, a hot oil treatment or seal your ends.

Have you got any changes you plan on making to your hair this year?

In the year 2013 I guarantee many of you will want to ensure you look after your hair, keep it healthy, retain length and also allow it to grow to it’s maximum potential.

How exactly can we achieve these things?!

The only way for change & progression to be made is for you to be…

*…Honest with yourself and evaluate how you’ve treated your hair last year.
*…Real with your expectations for your hair this year

It may sound harsh, but you cannot be mad if you haven’t put any work into looking after your hair and it hasn’t grown much.

Things to evaluate:

*Most importantly your diet & food intake… – health on the inside = health on the outside

*Your use of heat – if you’re using too much heat this can affect your hair progress & your hair’s overall health

*Trimming – have to trimmed too often or not often enough this year? In keeping your hair healthy, you need to let go of the dead, broken and split ends. Hanging onto them will only cause further damage along your hair shaft. However, you also don’t want to get too scissor happy (like I do) and trim alllll the time.

*Listening to your hair needs e.g. if your hair feels dry, try a deep condition, or a co-wash.

*Deep conditioning & protein treatments – have you done them enough? Or not often enough?

*The products you’re using & your understanding of how they work, what they have in them and whether it’s actually working for you

*Whether YOU research YOURSELF on things that concern your hair

*Whether you know/don’t know what products work on your hair

*Whether you put enough time in looking after your hair

*The tools you use on your hair – e.g. the state of your bobby pins, have they split, if so throw them away

*Products you no longer need

*The forms of protective styling you do – Are you pulling on your hair too much? Do you leave your hair out enough for you to care for it?

*Dispel any myths! e.g. Black hair doesn’t grow

*The love yes, love you give your hair – are you positive about it?

*Have you sought sound advice?

* Whether length or health is more important to you

*Have you kept a record of your growth i.e. through pictures or measurements? That way you can monitor your growth and changes that may occur in your hair

Will all this being said, the most important thing I feel everyone should have on their list is to ENJOY your hair, no matter what length its at. Although maintaining healthy hair does require a little work, it should never be taken too seriously. Have fun with your hair, get a new cut, colour or try out a new hairstyle.

Protective styling with Kinky Curly Hair again

Posted on: 30th December 2012 by CFYH

We all need to give our hair a break once in a while and ‘protective style’. With my own hair, I usually opt for my signature bun or a roll & tuck style. I also love switching it up completely and getting extensions (such as braids or twists) or a weave.

Earlier this year I did a weave using kinky curly looking hair & I loved it. It was low maintenance, all I really had to do was retwist my leave-out every night, undo it in the morning and spray the weave with a little water to spruce it up.

So as you may have seen, I’ve revisited this style. For me its nice to rock a style that’s pretty much the same length as my hair, looks like my hair while I’m actually protecting my hair underneath…win win right?

For those interested on my lips I’m wearing black|Up’s lipstick  in no. 13

This was just one stroke of the lipstick by the way!

‘Tis the season to be curly…

Posted on: 6th December 2012 by CFYH

Hey ladies!

If you’re on the facebook page you may have already gotten the down low on what this post is about. Well…yesterday, I was raiding through my products cupboard looking to try out something new.

A while back I went to the Curls Unleashed launch and received a bag of goodies, one of which was the Curl Boosting Jelly. I also recently received the Design Essentials Curl Enhancing Mousse.

I’m not a big ‘defined curls’ aka ‘wash & go’ fan but I thought I’d give the products a try. In the past I’ve used Eco styler gel, however there were just too many cons for me to keep using this.

*It took FOREVER and a day to dry

*My hair was super stiff and crunchy…trying to play in it was a myth!

*Trying to use it alongside a leave-in was a night mare

*Once it set I couldn’t style my hair/there was no movement

*Gave me that jeri curl look

*My incidence of fairy knots rose by like 50%

…Should I go on?

For these reasons, let’s just say I was very apprehensive to use the Curl Boosting Jelly.

I tried a bit of the jelly on one section of my hair and it was way too sticky for me, so then I tried the mousse on another section and while it defined curls, I needed something heavier to ensure they stayed that way. Sooo…I applied the mousse and then the jelly and vwah-la *cue the harps* it was the PERFECT combination for my hair.

Once it dried, my hair felt so good! It was soft, it moved and it didn’t feel like I had to apply anything to get it like this. In all I was very impressed!

Moreover, I woke up this morning, shook my hair out, applied a little water and it looks as good as it did yesterday! In love? I think so!

Fierce & Festive Natural Updo’s for the Holidays

Posted on: 16th November 2012 by CFYH

Hey ladies! Here are some ideas on how to wear your hair this festive season.

Below, are a few styles and styling tips provided by renowned Design Essentials® master stylist Deshonica Kerrie.

Design Essentials® Multi-Roll Updo

STYLING TIP #1: When creating the perfect, chic holiday updo, Design Essentials® Master Stylist Deshonica Kerrie prepped the model’s hair by first blowdrying it 80% straight.  By blow drying the hair first, it is easier to achieve smooth flat twists which helps to anchor the updo from the sides. Photo Credit: Blue Poppy

STYLING TIP #2: After twisting the side of the hair, Deshonica parts the remaining hair into multiple sections and begins to roll and tuck the hair, securing each roll with pins.  To ensure a smooth look while keeping the hair moisturized, Deshonica applies Design Essentials® Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion and Nutriment Rx Creme Hairdress to each rolled section. Photo Credit: Blue Poppy

STYLING TIP #3: This revolutionized French Roll which includes several multi-rolls was created using Design Essentials® Natural Curl Cleanser Sulfate Free ShampooNatural Moisturizing ConditionerNatural Daily Moisturizing Lotion and Nutriment Rx Creme Hairdress.  This is a great styling option for longtime and newly naturals, offering the perfect double-take style for the holidays!  Photo Credit: Blue Poppy

Design Essentials® Old & New Updo

STYLING TIP #1: For a festive night out this holiday season, Deshonica suggests creating a trendy look by combining a little bit of the old and new for a funky up-do. Deshonica achieves this style by first crafting a flat twist design around the sides and back of the hair. Photo Credit: Blue Poppy

STYLING TIP #2: After completing the flat twists, Deshonica rolled and tucked sections of the hair by applying dime-sized amounts of Design Essentials® Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion and Nutriment Rx Creme Hairdress. Afterward, each roll was secured with hair pins.  Photo Credit: Blue Poppy

STYLING TIP #3: Deshonica finishes this old and new retro style by locking in shine with a light mist of Design Essentials® Diamonds Oil Sheen, smoothed over each roll with the fingertips.  Photo Credit: Blue Poppy

Design Essentials® Spiral Updo

STYLING TIP #1: For a great updo to last your readers through the holiday season (approx. 2-4 weeks), Deshonica offers up the Spiral Updo. This style is achieved first by using Design Essentials® Natural Twist and Set Setting Lotion. After applying the product, Deshonica took small sections of the hair and hooked it to small and medium sized setting rods, making sure to start at the base of the hair while wrapping the hair downward, around the rod, toward the end. The hair was then secured to the rod with a hair clamp. Photo Credit: Blue Poppy

STYLING TIP #2: After removing the rods upon drying the hair, Deshonica Kerrie separated the coils using Design Essentials® Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion to achieve frizz-free, individual ringlets.  Photo Credit: Blue Poppy

STYLING TIP #3: Voila! Upon separating the coils, this natural girl is ready to start her holiday celebration! For long lasting wear, Deshonica recommends applying a small amount of Design Essentials® Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion to revitalize curls and reduce frizz as the curls begin to expand with wear.  Photo Credit: Blue Poppy

Autumn is hair!

Posted on: 22nd September 2012 by CFYH

Today officially being the first day of Autumn, I thought I’d give you a few hair care tips to help your hair regime transition from a summer to autumn one. As the season’s change your hair needs change a little too.

We’ve all been on our holidays, swimming trips and as a result the chlorine, extra heat & sun exposure may have taken a heavy toll on our hair – making it a little more dry and brittle.

If you’ve found your hair is dry & brittle here are some things you’ll want to do:

*Keep your ends in check! First off, if you need a fresh trim – go for it! Rid your hair of the brittle, broken ends.

*To replenish dry, brittle hair, a good deep conditioning treatment is definitely needed. During the colder months your hair will be more prone to drying out, so you may want to generally increase the amount of times you condition/deep condition your hair. Click here to read how I’ve been deep conditioning my hair recently

*Alternate between a conditioner that will provide moisture & one that will provide protein. Click here to see which one you may need more of. (Moisture will help keep your hair hydrated and protein will help keep your hair strands strong & healthy)

*I find I co-wash a lot more in the colder months, it definitely helps keep my hair moisturised. However not everyone has the time to do this, so make sure you have a good leave-in conditioner.

*Incorporate more protective hairstyles to your routine. e.g. instead of wearing a twist out everyday, try wearing twists for the week and then a twist out end of the week

*If you wear hats a lot in the Autumn/Winter, line your hat with satin/silk – it’ll help prevent friction that can cause breakage.

In all the main things you need to keep in mind this season when it comes to your hair is

Nourishing it
Conditioning it
Protecting it

Deep conditioning just became 10x more fun!

Posted on: 16th September 2012 by CFYH

The weekends are always my time to kick back, relax and deep condition! I try my best to deep condition once every week, alternating between a deep conditioner targeted at moisturising my hair and a deep conditioner that will provide protein to my hair.

For moisture I like:

*TRESemme Naturals – Nourishing moisture conditioner

*As I am’s – Hydration Elation Intensive conditioner

*Curls - Coconut sublime conditioner

For protein I like:

*Parnevu – Hair Mayonnaise

Now my conditioning routine has been bumped up like 10 notches! I haven’t got a hooded dryer at home nor the space to even accommodate one. So when I was offered to review the Hair Therapy Wrap, I was super excited.

“The Hair Therapy Wrap is a cordless thermal turban heat wrap that helps repair damaged hair.”

Now I’m sure we all know damaged hair cannot be repaired (once damaged, it’s damaged) but this does work as a great way to increase the efficacy of your hair treatments.

I’m use to deep conditioning, covering my hair in a plastic cap/cling film and getting on with things around the house, so I love that this wrap is cord-free.

This hair wrap comes with gel heat packs, the wrap (insulation for maximized product penetration) and 3 plastic caps .

You literally apply your conditioner/hot oil treatment to your hair, cover it with the plastic cap and microwave the Hair Wrap (with the gel packs inside) for 60 seconds (with intervals) and you’re good to go!

Oil and reconstructive treatments are activated by the warmth to do their work, as the hair follicle of each strand is relaxed and open for diffusion”

The Hair Therapy Wrap stays hot for up to 30 minutes, is easy to use & is reusable. This product has cut my deep conditioning time in half because the heat allows the conditioner to do its work much faster and efficiently.

The only con I have for this wrap is you have to be very very careful when using them in the microwave as the gel packs can be easily overheat and burst. However I give this a overall rating of 9/10!!!

For anyone that would like to purchase one head on over to Gidore (p.s. their packaging is sooo cute right? *see above*)

Have any of you used this already? What did you think?
