Today’s CFYH feature is Kim aka Backsynfan of YouTube
Tell us a little bit about yourself Kim…
I’m Kim. A free-spirited girl with a love for fashion, creativity, and natural hair! I do natural hair tutorials on my Youtube channel
Have you been natural all your life; if not why did you choose to ‘go natural’?
No. I went natural about 2 years ago. At the time, I was always wearing extensions and finally figured, why not just go natural and stop relaxing since I never wear my real hair out anyway? Also, I wanted to see what my ‘real’ texture would be like, since I’ve been relaxed since the age of 6.
How did family & friends react to your decision to go natural?
For the most part, I got positive responses. But I did get a few “why would you do that’s?”, which didn’t bother me because I am never the type to worry about others’ opinions on what I do.
Do you have a hair regimen, If so what is it?
I do not have a set regimen. But I try to at least moisturize my hair daily and deep condition weekly. I am also trying to do more protective styles and keep my hands out of my hair.
I love your channel because when it comes to creativeness and variety hair-wise – that’s you! What tips/advice would you give to others wanting to try out a bold colour?
I would say NO TO COLORING! I definitely learned my lesson last year, as I had severe breakage from dying my natural hair. I would suggest trying spray in colors which do not damage the hair, or adding in colored pieces.
3 of your favourite hair products?
I really love Cantu Shea butter leave in: it gets my hair super moisturized and manageable. Eco styler gel: it makes my styles look more polished, and it is also a great product for setting twists. Extra virgin olive oil: I love it as a sealant and to give my hair shine.
Have you made any mistakes with your natural hair? If so what advice would you give to other naturals?
Yes, coloring and constantly washing were the two biggest mistakes I made. The color broke my hair off, and the constant washing led to a lot of manipulation thereby leading to more breakage. I would say less is more with natural hair. The more you leave it alone (i.e. low manipulation) the more it will flourish.
Any words of encouragement?
Stick with it and know that there are SO MANY options for styling and caring for natural hair. Have fun with it and enjoy it!
Oh and let’s not forget to ask, because you also showcase fashion on your channel too. How would you describe your style?
I wouldn’t necessarily put my style in a category. I’m open to pretty much anything and I wear whatever I think will look good on me. No matter what, I always try to keep it classy, tasteful, but fun! Variety is the spice of life!
Is there anyone/thing in particular you draw inspiration from?
There is no one person or thing I look to for inspiration. I draw inspiration from anything and everything- magazines, TV shows, artwork…everything.
What tip can you give those wanting to thrift but have no clue where & how to start?
Do some research on good thrift stores in your area. Go in with an open mind and be prepared to spend quite a bit of time going through all the items. Also I have a video with tips on how to start thrifting, check it out!
