Hair Story – Cheryl
Why did you choose to go natural?
I have a girlfriend who is natural and I really thought that her hair was beautiful. She inspired me to go natural. I also wanted to give up relaxers, especially after educating myself about the damage that I could be doing to my scalp and hair.
How long have you been natural for?
I did the big chop on April 30, 2010.
How did family & friends react to your decision to go natural?
Most of my friends and family have gotten used to seeing me with different hairstyles. My husband likes long hair so it was probably the most difficult for him. It’s growing back nicely.
Has being natural changed you at all?
Not really except that I play with my hair more often than I did when it was relaxed. I do now know that many women actually think that I am courageous to wear my hair natural but I love the freedom. When you truly love yourself you begin to recognize your true beauty lies in the acceptance of your authenticity.
Do you have a hair regime, If so what is it?
I oil and massage my scalp every other night. I conditioner-wash almost every other day. I use a a leave-in conditioner daily. I make up my own oil combination and leave-in. I deep condition weekly using natural ingredients too. I take hair vitamins and drink lots of water.
What is your favourite go-to hairstyle?
What is your favourite hair product(s)?
Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding and Buttercreme, Carol’s Daughter Rosemary Mint shampoo, Hair Milk & Elixir, Lush products…I could go on!
Have you made any mistakes with your natural hair?
I really don’t do too much to my hair, since my primary goal is to grow it back long again. If anything, I need to keep my hands out of it.
Any words of encouragement?
Be true to yourself. Be patient with the process of working with your new texture. Remember, that what you put inside of your body also affects your hair. Be gentle with your hair.
